Dear Concordia Prep Students and Parents,

I am writing to inform you of an important policy change for the 2018-2019 academic year for the Concordia Preparatory Upper School regarding the use of cell phones. 

During my time as an administrator, we have struggled to find the most effective use for cell phones. These devices can be both powerful educational tools and incredibly disruptive to the learning environment. After significant discussion, our administrative team has decided to follow several other area private schools and implement a more restrictive policy regarding the use of phones during the school day for upper school students.

We will continue to allow upper school students to bring their phones to school but they will not be permitted to use them for any reason in our buildings during the school day. Students may use phones outside the building during passing periods.

Phones that are seen or heard in school buildings during the school day will be taken and held until the end of the day and the student will be assigned detention.

Technology will be available for classroom use as Chromebooks will continue to be available when electronic devices are being used to enhance lessons. Students are welcome to bring personal Chromebooks, laptops, or tablets with a 7” or larger screen for use throughout the day.

June 18 – August 10, 2018: During the summer months, Concordia Prep school and offices will be open Monday through Thursday: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, and Friday: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm.

CPS Summer Work for New and Returning Students

Congratulations on the completion of another school year! To help maintain your skills and to help prepare you for the academic challenges of the 2018-2019 school year, some classes require coursework to take place over the summer months. Students may be asked to complete mathematics problems, read books, complete assignments in English or World Languages, and/or get a jump on AP Courses. Areas of study include most Math, English/Language Arts, World Language, and several Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Don’t delay. Start today!

Middle School Enrichment Course Requests

Attached is a form for your student to select his or her enrichment courses for the 2018-19 school year. Please download the interactive form, fill it out, and email it to Ms. Martha Bainbridge at marthabainbridge@concordiaprepschool.org. The Enrichment Course Selection Requests should be returned by July 31.

Employment Opportunity

Concordia Preparatory School is searching for a responsible, mature adult to assist with cafeteria duties during the 2018-2019 school year. This part-time position requires the candidate to assist with distributing Teri’s Cafe lunches from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm each school day. When lunches are finished, this person is responsible for cleaning the tables and emptying the trash.

Boathouse Jackets – On Sale until July 30

Boathouse jackets are  currently on sale until July 30, 2018. Please visit: https:// concordiaprepschool2018. itemorder.com/ to order your jacket.
While the Boathouse jacket is not required, many students enjoy wearing these jackets during the school day, as they are an accepted dress code item.

School Uniforms

Please be reminded that Lands’ End is the sole provider of school uniform bottoms, shirts, and sweaters. All of these uniform pieces must be purchased through Lands’ End. Below is an overview of the dress code from the Upper School and Middle School handbooks:

Uniform items purchased from Lands’ End are:

  • Short-sleeve or long-sleeve white, red, and gray polo shirts for Upper School, white long-sleeve button-down “School Uniform Long Sleeve” Oxford shirt (boys) and white long-sleeve button-down “School Uniform Long Sleeve” Oxford shirt (girls)
  • Sweaters, khaki pants, shorts (Middle School), skorts, and proper fitting black or brown belts. Shorts may be worn only on designated Out of Uniform Dress Days in the Upper School. Shorts may be worn by Middle School students every day. 
  • All polos and sweaters must have the approved Concordia Prep logo.
  • Please be reminded while ordering that all students with visible tattoos must have them covered at all times.

From the School Nurse

Over the Counter Medication Form: Remember to get your child’s physician to complete an  Over the Counter Medication Authorization Form for next school year. This will allow the nurse to give your child medications for pain, cough, sore throats and skin irritation (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough drops, itch cream and skin care). The form is available from the nurse or on the website under “Forms and Publications”. It is school policy that prescription and nonprescription medications are kept in the health suite and administered by the nurse. Download the Over the Counter Medication Authorization Form

Returning Students: Parents please complete the  Returning Student Medical Statement/Health Information and Emergency Contact form for the next school year which is available on the website under “Menu” and “Middle or Upper School Parents” and “Forms and Publications”. The form should be given to the nurse in August.

Remember if you have your child’s physical exam done over the summer, it is good for the entire school year (all three sports seasons). The PreParticipation Physical Evaluation Form is also available from the nurse or on the website. For any questions contact Ellen Marquardt at 410-825-2323 Ext 244 or  ellenmarquardt@concordiaprepschool.org.

News from the Parent-Teacher League (PTL)

Back to School Pool Party on Friday, September 7 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm

Concordia Prep’s PTL is hosting a back to school pool party for all Concordia Prep students, teachers, parents and siblings. Students and teachers are FREE; parents/siblings are $10 each. A signed waiver, RSVP form + money due September 4th to Main Office. All guests must sign a waiver. PIZZA provided by PTL, each family requested to bring an item to share (see RSVP form for a shared item). Enjoy the activity pool with 2 diving boards, water slide, lazy river, vortex and water basketball plus lap pool.

Our CPS Parent-Teacher League is a league of parents and teachers from our CPS community that helps the school to meet its needs. We are excited to announce and welcome our new PTL Board Members:

We still have TWO  open positions, please contact any of the above board members to express your interest in being on the board or helping with our various events. Details on volunteer opportunities and our meeting schedule for the 2018-2019 school year will be shared throughout the summer. 
Some of the events that we will need volunteers for are: Online Merchandise Sales, Uniform Swap, Fall Open House, Bid for Kids Auction and Basket BINGO. Keep an eye out for more information on these and other events throughout the school year.
The PTL is an important organization within CPS. We will offer a lot of value to our students, teachers, and school through our volunteer efforts. We know many of you will want to help, please contact any of the Board members for more information.
We would also like to offer a special THANK YOU to Chris Nelson, our departing PTL President. Thank you, Chris, for all you worked to accomplish during the past year! We will do our best to continue to build a strong PTL community, and we hope to see you at many events.

2018-2019 Bus Information

Concordia Preparatory School is pleased to announce bus transportation to and from school for the 2018-2019 academic year. There are two routes:

  1. Catonsville Route: The Catonsville bus leaves the Ingleside Shopping Center (5668 Baltimore National Pike) in Catonsville each school day at 6:45 am. It stops at 7405 Liberty Road at approximately 7:00 am and then continues to Concordia Prep. The bus leaves CPS each school day at 3:30 pm and stops at Catonsville and Liberty Road.
  2. Harford County Route: The Harford County bus leaves Harford Mall (696 Belair Road) each school day at 6:40 am. It stops at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School (12022 Jerusalem Road) at approximately 7:00 am and then continues to Concordia Prep. The bus leaves CPS each school day at 3:30 pm and stops at St. Paul’s and Harford Mall.

Parents have the two payment options:

  1. Pay the bus service fee for the 2018-2019 school year before the school year begins on August 27, 2018. Parents who choose this option will receive a 5% discount on the yearly cost of the bus.
  2. Pay the bus service fee monthly through the FACTS Tuition Management program.

The cost of the 2018-2019 bus service is $1,125.00 for the entire year or $125.00 per month from August 2018 through May 2019. Parents who pay the entire year before August will pay $1,068.75 (5% discount).

Course Requests for 2018-19

Students and their parents in grades 8-11 may start to request their courses and electives for next year (grades 9-12). The course requests will be for the entire year and both 1st and 2nd-semester electives. Some courses will require teacher approval/recommendations.
